Processing–Microstructure–Dielectric Relationships in Aerosol-Deposited BaTiO₃ Coatings
Research Status: In Progress
Research Areas: Electroceramics | Dry Aerosol Deposition | Dielectric Characterization | Functional Thin Films
1- Project Overview
This research investigates the fabrication and dielectric behavior of barium titanate (BaTiO₃) ceramic coatings produced using room-temperature Dry Aerosol Deposition (DAD). The study focuses on understanding how powder synthesis, aerosol deposition, and the resulting coating microstructure influence dielectric performance. BaTiO₃ coatings will be deposited onto gold interdigitated electrodes (IDEs) to evaluate their frequency-dependent electrical characteristics.
The project will also investigate differences between conventionally sintered BaTiO₃ ceramics and aerosol-deposited coatings to establish processing–microstructure–property relationships.
2- Research Objectives
-
Synthesize and characterize BaTiO₃ ceramic powders suitable for aerosol deposition.
-
Fabricate BaTiO₃ coatings on gold interdigitated electrode substrates.
-
Investigate coating morphology, thickness, and microstructure using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and cross-sectional analysis.
-
Examine crystalline phase composition using X-ray diffraction (XRD).
-
Evaluate frequency-dependent capacitance and dielectric loss through impedance measurements.
-
Investigate relationships between processing conditions, coating microstructure, and dielectric performance.
3- Experimental and Analytical Approach
Add a Title
Powder Processing: Ceramic powder synthesis and preparation for aerosol deposition.Coating Fabrication: Room-temperature dry aerosol deposition onto patterned gold electrodes.
Materials Characterization: SEM, cross-sectional imaging, coating thickness measurements, and XRD.
Electrical Characterization: Impedance spectroscopy, capacitance measurements, and dielectric loss analysis.
Numerical Analysis: Evaluation of electric-field distribution and electrode geometry effects to support interpretation of dielectric measurements.
4- Expected Outcome
The study aims to establish the feasibility of fabricating functional BaTiO₃ dielectric coatings through dry aerosol deposition and to identify the microstructural factors governing their electrical response.
